Mijares, together with Javier Pérez Andrés, reviews her career and the current situation of the wine scene and firmly assures that there is no limit for women in this industry, “the only thing a woman can’t do is to pee against walls”

La Seca (Valladolid), 10 December 2019.- Following the conversations with the journalist Carlos Delgado, the sommelier Custodio Zamarra and the journalist and writer José Peñín in previous instalments of ‘Conversations about Spanish wine’, the guest of the fourth chapter of this programme, revolving around the world of wine and its evolution in recent years, is a woman that represents everything in the world of winemaking: Isabel Mijares. The journalist Javier Pérez Andrés chats with her in the restaurant ‘Mesón del Cid’ in Madrid.

Isabel Mijares has one of the most extraordinary careers in the industry of Spanish wine. Graduated in oenology in Bordeaux, she was the first woman that opted for an unknown world after finishing her bachelor’s in chemistry. Her ability to communicate, her intelligence and her skills in human relations have allowed her to win the affection of the sector in many countries. She has travelled across all continents. She chaired professional associations, Regulatory Councils, conferences, international fora, etc. And, among all these things, her didactic work stands out, both in missions undertaken in America in the field of research and the empowerment of viticulture, as in many events where she always has shown a special ability to connect with the public. Her descriptions are already famous in the world of wine tasting, where she always finds original, unconventional and witty examples.

Currently, Isabel Mijares is still working, travelling, entering in contests, advising wineries and, above all, representing her country in many fora, and cultural and technical events related to the world of wine. Therefore, this episode of ‘Conversations about Spanish wine’ is almost a document of the recent history of oenology and viticulture in Spain.

Together with Javier Pérez Andrés, Mijares takes a look back to her career and analyses the current situation in a conversation filled with anecdotes, interesting facts and information about the history of wine. In this regard, she emphasises that Verdejo is a grape variety that produces great wine nowadays and affirms that ‘Verdejo variety is elegant and well-structured; it is a wine you can always rely on’. Also, she is adamant when she points out that women have no limits in this sector: “The only thing women can’t do is to pee against walls”.
