An exclusive lot of 25,000 bottles represents the starting point of the project of the historical winery of the DO Rueda in the DO Ribera del DueroFuentecén (Burgos) and La Seca (Valladolid), September 15, 2016.-
One hundred kilometers separate the Cradle of the Verdejo from the Heart of the Tempranillo. One hundred kilometers between La Seca and Fuentecén. One hundred kilometers upstream along the Duero river connect the DO Rueda and the DO Ribera del Duero. One hundred kilometers that the oenologists Ángel Calleja, Elena M. Oyagüe and Roberto L. Tello have traversed to bring to market the first red wine from Ribera del Duero with a name synonymous with Verdejo. Beginning now it also tastes like red wine from Ribera del Duero: Cuatro Rayas.
The Bodega Cuatro Rayas project in Ribera del Duero, led by their oenologists Ángel Calleja and Elena M. Oyagüe, begins with one small step: to spotlight a selected lot of 25,000 bottles of a red wine made with grapes from vineyards situated near the Burgos town of Fuentecén, an enclave which is the heart of the Ribera del Duero region located between Aranda and Peñafiel. They have selected grapes from vineyards more than 20 years old to launch their first wine from Ribera del Duero intending to make it a first experience that will serve as a springboard for adding riparian wines to their broad portfolio of wine from Rueda and Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León.
This project has its origins in the growing demand of customers and consumers of Cuatro Rayas Verdejo, in Spain and several foreign markets, who understand that the partnership Verdejo de Rueda and Tempranillo de Ribera in recent years has become the great ambassador couple of quality wines in Spain. Three generations of oenologists for a varied array of wines
Since the founding of the winery in 1935, team work has been the cornerstone of the viticultural project, a special link between the winegrower that pampers the grape and the winemaker that produces a wine that showcases the fruit‘s best characteristics. Currently, Bodega Cuatro Rayas has an oenology department with three outstanding individuals who each love making wine, who belong to three different generations and who exemplify the utmost collaboration among professionals. But especially they all love quality wines. Angel Calleja, who has the cumulative experience of producing wine in the Rueda Denomination of Origin during forty grape harvests, Elena M. Oyagüe, who adds some twenty years of endeavor and dedication to the winery, and Roberto L. Tello, who with barely five years of experience has already proven that the new generations are making an impressive debut.
Calleja, master of masters, has sought to pass down all of his expertise and secrets to these two younger oenologists who have been called to take up the baton and assume the challenge of making wine at one of the most traditional wineries in the DO. Each of them contributes a point of view and a work ethic focused on ensuring that Cuatro Rayas wines continue to produce the delicacies of some of the most demanding national and international consumers. These three generations work hand-in-hand to contribute different points of view on a variety of wines: Verdejos, Tempranillos and Sauvignons; young wines, wines aged on lees, aged in oak barrels, solera aged, fermented in oak barrels or frizzante wines with low alcohol content. The result is an ample array of wines produced with the indispensable participation of all the men and women who make up the Bodega Cuatro Rayas family. Experience with the Tempranillo grape
Along these same lines, it is worth noting that both of these oenologists, respected for their expertise with the verdejo grape, are also experts regarding the tempranillo grape in La Seca. Cuatro Rayas wines such as Tinto Roble Ecológico (in high demand in international markets) and Vacceos Roble and Vacceos Crianza (with a deep-rooted tradition in Castile and Leon) have been for years the reds that have accompanied the classical Cuatro Rayas Verdejo and Cuatro Rayas Viñedos Centenarios, as well as for the past few months Cuatro Rayas Cuarenta Vendimias. Cuatro Rayas Ribera del Duero 2015
After a period of 5 months in French oak and American oak barrels and an equal amount of time resting in the bottle in the winery before being released to the market, Cuatro Rayas Ribera del Duero successfully expresses the essence of this land which is clearly defined by its terroir. The result is an oak tempranillo that is dark cherry-red in color, of medium depth, with garnet rims. The nose is powerful and balanced, with aromas of ripe fruit, torrefacto, vanilla and spices. It has a velvety mid-palate, smooth and persistent, bringing out the elegance that is characteristic of the best red wines of Ribera del Duero.
