2020 Vintage: the ‘Great Rueda Wine’ is born in an early, short campaign and has a wider aromatic potential

Bodega Cuatro Rayas has a new selection table, a press for small productions and vats for ageing and getting better longevity on the Verdejo variety

La Seca, 8 October 2020.- In the middle of the winemaking process after the harvest, Bodega Cuatro Rayas evaluates an early and short campaign (1 to 25 September) that has been carried out in a particularly orderly and phased manner to meet the strict protocols against COVID-19. The total lack of rain during the harvesting weeks—with some showers that were positives to control the ripening—, together with good acidity, pH, and potential alcohol parameters, has resulted in grapes with great quality and a high concentration of aromatic precursors that will allow us to get a full-bodied wine, with balanced acidity, but, above all, very aromatic.

In a year with fair weather—without any hail during the Summer—, in which there has been a moderate grape yield with the right health status, the cooperative has harvested more than 2,400 hectares in 30 villages throughout Valladolid and Segovia provinces where a wide range of varieties are cultivated: mainly Verdejo, but also Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, Palomino Fino and Tempranillo. The near 300 winegrower members of the cooperative, along with the technical department of the winery, have worked together during the whole vegetative cycle to obtain the highest quality at the time of the harvest. Still committed to the organic vineyard and sustainability, the winery has continued to encourage the cultivation of organic vine plots. The health status of the grape in this campaign has been good, and in the cases where the plant needed some treatment, we have opted to dispense with insecticides and used techniques such as sexual confusion using pheromones to prevent and kill pests.

The main novelty of this vintage is that the winery has adhered to the new category of the designation of Origin Rueda: ‘Great Rueda Wine’, that requires that the grape used for the wines within this quality framework come from vineyards with a maximum yield of 6,500kg per hectare and being older than 30 years. In this regard, the cooperative has the largest area of old vineyard in DO Rueda, with century-old vine plots—even pre-phylloxera vine plots in certain cases—and most of them are older than 40 years. These vineyards have gone through a selection process performed by the Filed and Oenology Departments to determine which plots are to be used to the winemaking of wines under this new category. The selected plots have been manually selected and harvested in crates during the day and have been also manually processed when they arrive in the winery to ensure the exceptionality of the grapes for these special wines.

New selection table, press and vats for the winemaking of special brands
Bodega Cuatro Rayas has incorporated new equipment in the facilities for the processing of the grape. Grapes from selected plots, manually harvested during the day, and refrigerated in crates in the cold room have gone through this new selection table, and then, processed separately according to their plot of origin to a state-of-the-art press for small amounts (8,000kg). The must from these grapes has been transferred to different types of vats: stainless steel, oak, concrete, and barrels, to produce special wines and also for the development of archeoenology efforts to look for the optimal ageing of the Verdejo variety.
